After Suzuki book 2, my adult violin students sometimes ask if they are ready to step away from the Suzuki method.
With two books behind them in the Suzuki violin method, they have a really solid foundation. Those who study with me have even gotten extensive training in how to read music in addition to all the great fundamentals of ear training, tone production, intonation, posture, and form.
And it’s true; they could leave the Suzuki violin method and make excellent progress with a traditional approach.
But I strongly recommend that they don’t. Here’s why.

Three “secret” ingredients in Suzuki book 3

Ah, what a shameless headline. The three things that make Suzuki violin book 3 special are not secret at all! But they are not widely known so I’m going to do my part to spread the news.
Suzuki violin books 1 and 2 give students a fantastic foundation. Suzuki book 3 teaches you how to build on that foundation with three critical skills:

1. Expression:If you’ve ever been amazed at how a great violinist can squeeze meaning and emotion out of the simplest musical passage, it’s because of expression–they are sharing their human experience with the audience with just the touch of their hands. You are a unique person with individual experience and gifts, and expression training in Suzuki book 3 can help you bring them to life.
2. Musicality: This is closely related to expression. Book 3 dives into the rich world of musical interpretation. That’s how you learn how to shape all those black and white notes into something meaningful and memorable!
3. Vision: True musicians are well rounded. Suzuki book 3 includes lessons in music theory, music history, and introduces you to the wide world of violin literature, diverse performers, various methods such as Wohlfahrt’s etudes and Simon Fischer’s approach to tone production. Expanded vision and a long range view of where you are going are critical to becoming an advanced violinist.

We will work on losing your inhibitions, refining your tone and intonation, you will master 3rd position and shifting, we will develop your vibrato and integrate it into your playing, we examine bow distribution, phrase shaping, bow technique, and left hand dexterity.

I like to think of Suzuki Book 3 as a rite of passage from the realm of “beginners” to the realm of intermediate violinists. It is a very exciting journey which opens up a whole world to you!
