I went looking for a new Metronome/Tuner when I learned that they stopped making my favorite brand. I also wanted a unit I could recommend to my students, most of whom are adult beginners.
So I bought Korg TM40 and put it through my tests to see if it could stand up to the challenge. It did. I really like
this unit and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a combination metronome/tuner/pitch generator.
Watch the video below for a thorough breakdown, but here is the quick version:
Pros
- Speaker on the front
- Separate metronome and tuner buttons for ease of use
- You can use metronome and tuner functions simultaneously
- Only $25!
Cons
- It could be louder. This setback is easily correctable by plugging your computer speakers into the Korg.
- You have to press the pitch generator button repeatedly to get to the pitch you want.
- It only generates pitches in one octave.
I did not find these to be huge obstacles, though.
In the video below I show you some details about how the Korg works, and at $24.95 it’s a great deal. Check it out for yourself by clicking the image:
Korg Tm 40 is no longer in stock, Its been up graded to Korg TM 50.

Thanks, Richard! Good to know.
I am currently having problems with my Korg TM-40. The tuner function (which I RARELY use) is acting up…..it will not settle on a pitch, even when the pitch is spot on.
I might have to take back my recommendation of this little unit.
when there are loud noises around it is very hard to tune my guitar because the surrounding noise keeps on activating the tuner
I know exactly what you mean! That little needle goes CRAZY when my birds start chirping!
Luckily, they make little gizmos for GUITAR that makes your problem disappear. You can get a plug-in that goes directly from your guitar to your tuner, and it causes the tuner to ignore outside noises. If you have an acoustic, I believe you can still get a pick-up that just clips onto your guitar, and then plugs into the tuner. Try searching for “Guitar Tuner Pick Up”, and I’m sure you will find what you need. Good luck! –Lora
Hi Lora,
wow, i dont know it could using output speaker?!?!
Okay, i will try on it, and will let you know the result^^
hi,
i also bought a unit last december.
It pretty cool but i prefer it could be much louder.
Let say, when i adjust to 4/60 for beat,
the 4th should be more louder than before
to notify, but it sound same!
So, when i practising bowing, i almost cant hear the 4th beat.
Last but not least, i love the tuner!

Hey Ko
Try plugging your computer speakers into the unit!!! It works like a charm, and you WILL hear the 4th beat.
The volume is a little problem, but for the price, I love the unit.
